About the Municipal Observation Tower

Visitors who climb all 153 steps to the top can admire the town from a height of 35.3 metres above ground, at an elevation of 513 metres above sea level. The 15th meridian east is marked on the corner of the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.

The Museum of the Jindřichův Hradec Region operates the Municipal Tower as an observation tower, and it also serves as a venue for various events. Trumpet performances have been held there on several occasions, and the tower has hosted a happening by the renowned visual artist Antonín Málek. In 2008, it was exceptionally opened during the late evening as part of the Museum Night Festival.

For more than a decade, the tower has also been the venue for the annual Běž na věž (Race Up the Tower), a sporting and entertainment competition in which participants test their speed as they race up the tower for the museum director’s travelling trophy.
